TL;DR
- Power effectively operates by renaming things rather than suppressing facts, altering meaning to camouflage errors and failures.
- Contemporary left-wing politics systematically uses language manipulation to shield ideological prejudices from evidence.
- George Orwell's concept of Newspeak in '1984' illustrates how distorting language serves as an instrument of domination, limiting thought.
- Raymond Aron noted how Western leftists turned political terms into religious dogmas, using words like 'revolution' and 'justice' as shields.
- In Colombia, euphemisms such as 'Paz total' (Total Peace) disguise concessions and legal benefits that reduce the cost of organized crime.
- Referring to coca as 'plantas ancestrales' (ancestral plants) linguistically transforms a drug trafficking base into a cultural symbol.
- Other examples of euphemisms include 'disidencias' (dissidences) for existing guerrillas, 'Economía popular' (popular economy) for structural informality, and 'estallido social' (social outburst) to avoid condemning vandalism.
- Defending the meaning of words is crucial for democracy, as the loss of meaning prevents critical deliberation and allows negative realities to persist under the guise of positive terminology.
