Problema Fiscal

Problema Fiscal

TL;DR

  • Colombia's fiscal deficit is projected to close the year near 7.1% of GDP, exceeding initial projections and missing the 2027 convergence target of 3%.
  • The state spends over $129 trillion annually more than its income, and public debt exceeds 61% of GDP.
  • Interest payments on debt now represent 17% of the national budget, nearly equivalent to the entire education budget.
  • Fiscal credibility is declining, with interest payments doubling as a proportion of tax revenue in five years.
  • Low economic growth (1.6% in 2024) and inflexible spending create a dangerous debt trap.
  • Attempts to finance spending through tax increases have been largely unsuccessful, with the 2022 reform collecting only 0.6% of GDP instead of a projected 1.7%.
  • Foreign direct investment has fallen by 15.2% in the last year.
  • Declining oil production and export revenues from Ecopetrol worsen the structural deficit.
  • Public spending has increased by 9.5% in real terms, driven by state payroll expansion.
  • A solution requires fiscal discipline, sustainable economic growth, reactivating investment, reviewing subsidies, and restoring confidence in the rules of the game.
